Deck balusters – First, use tape measure to record the distance between the bottom edge of the handrail and the lower edge of the tire rim joist if balusters will be attached to the outside of the tire rim. If the balusters are cut to fit flush with the decking surface, measure the distance between the underside of the handrail, and the surface of the tire. Second, use your tape measure to find the exact midpoint between two of your railing posts. Use your pencil to mark the center. Use your tape measure and pencil to mark 5-inch apart in both directions from this center point until you reach the railing post at each end. Last, use your tape measure to record the size of the gap between the last deck balusters and your railing post at each end. If the size of the hole is less than 2 1/2 inches, move all your balusters inward 2 1/2 inches. Restart adjustment process in the center with your new guideline. Leaving a small end hole will affect the overall appearance of your deck rail.
